Why Is Lighting So Important for a Padel Court?
Jul 25, 2025

Unlike other sports, padel is typically played in a glass-enclosed court, which creates unique reflections and shadows. Proper padel court lighting ensures:

Optimal visibility for both players and spectators

Reduced glare and shadowing

Safe playing conditions during night games

Compliance with international padel lighting standards

International Lighting Standards for Padel Courts

The FIP (International Padel Federation) and various European guidelines set specific standards for padel court illumination. Here are the key requirements:

Minimum lighting level:

Recreational use: 200 lux

Club level & training: 300–500 lux

Professional or televised matches: 750–1000 lux

Uniformity: Light should be evenly distributed across the entire court. Uniformity ratio should ideally be above 0.7.

Color temperature: Around 4000K–6000K (cool white light) is recommended for clear visibility.

Anti-glare design: Fixtures should be positioned to prevent direct glare in players’ eyes.

Choosing the Right Type of Lights for Your Padel Court

When it comes to padel court lighting, LED floodlights are the top choice due to their energy efficiency, durability, and consistent performance. Here are key features to look for:

LED Technology:

Long-lasting and cost-efficient, LED lights for padel courts consume less power and offer instant brightness without warm-up time.

Beam Angle:

A narrower beam (30°–60°) focuses light directly onto the court, improving brightness and reducing light spill.

IP Rating (Water and Dust Protection):

Look for a rating of IP65 or higher to ensure lights withstand outdoor weather conditions.

High CRI (Color Rendering Index):

A CRI of 80+ ensures true color representation, which is especially important for televised matches.

Anti-Glare Shielding:

Choose padel court lights with built-in reflectors or shielding to minimize glare, especially in courts with glass walls.

How Many Lights Are Needed for a Standard Padel Court?

Typically, a standard 20x10m padel court requires 4 to 8 LED floodlights, depending on their wattage and court usage. Most professional courts install 4 poles (one at each corner or side) with 2 lights per pole.

Other Considerations

Height of Installation: Lighting poles are usually placed at 6meters high.

Control Systems: Consider smart lighting controls or motion sensors to improve energy savings.

Aesthetic Design: For high-end or panoramic padel courts, choose lighting fixtures that complement the court’s sleek, modern look.
